Written by ohryankelley / January 29, 2010 4:02 pm / 7 Comments

Author J.D. SalingerAuthor J.D. Salinger, whose novel “The Catcher in the Rye” has sold over 61 million copies worldwide, died yesterday in his Cornish, NH, home at the age of 91.

Published in 1951, “The Catcher in the Rye” became Mr. Salinger’s most famous work with its depiction of its angry, teenage protagonist, Holden Caulfield. For several generations of American high school students Salinger’s novel has been the seminal coming-of-age work assigned in English classes.

Salinger, who had not published a new work since 1965, lived in near-total isolation, having refused the attention of the literary world and the news media for decades. Read more about the life of JD Salinger…

Written by ohryankelley / January 29, 2010 12:49 pm / Add New Comment

UK Man Sets New Yo-Yo World RecordAustralian Ben McPhee has set a world record for the most yo-yos spinning at the same time – managing to hang 16 yo-yos off his fingers, hooks, and even his ears and mouth. The previous record was nine simultaneous spinning yo-yos. The new record was broken at the London Toy Fair but has yet to be ratified by Guinness World Records. McPhee, publicizing the UK launch of American toy brand YoYo Factory, said: “It looks like it’s going to be the year of the yo-yo in the UK so it seemed like a good idea to start with a real yo-yo challenge.” Read the full story at The Telegraph UK…

Written by ohryankelley / January 28, 2010 10:41 am / 2 Comments

Gamesville CatchUp CoverAll Winner!Congratulations to Gamesviller Helives123 of Macks Creek, MO, who won $382 this morning playing CatchUp CoverAll.

Useless Fact!

Helives123’s hometown of Macks Creek, MO, was at one point known as one of the most infamous speed traps in the entire nation, with a strictly enforced 45-MPH speed limit along US 54, which currently has a 60-MPH speed limit on either side of town. However, in 1995, that all came to a screeching halt when the State of Missouri passed a law prohibiting Missouri cities and towns from collecting more than 45% of their total revenue from speeding tickets. At the time Macks Creek had been collecting approximately 85% of its revenue from speeding tickets and as a result of the state’s ruling the town’s entire police department quit and the mayor resigned from office. Congratulations again to Helives123 and to all our REAL cash prize winners this week!

Wb294evr Wins $132 In Quick-Draw Poker, Contemplates New Purchases

Written by ohryankelley / January 26, 2010 11:11 pm / 12 Comments

Wb294evrEarlier this month Gamesviller Wb294evr of Fairmount, GA, won a $132 jackpot playing Quick-Draw Poker here at Gamesville.

What does this lucky Gamesviller do for work? What's the story behind her Gamesville member name? Find out below…

Gamesville: Congratulations! What was it like when you realized you won?
I was rushing back to the computer after taking a break and was distracted talking to my hubby. The game started and I looked over from talking and said, 'Oh my goodness! I just won!' He quickly replied, 'You're funny.' I said, 'No! Look, I won!' We both looked at the screen with amazement; he and I were both very excited!

What will you spend your winnings on?
I would like some new tennis shoes and we'll probably use the rest to pay some bills around the house.

What do you do for a living?
I am a substitute teacher. I really enjoy working with kids. Of course there are those days when I have had all I can take of those hormonal teenagers. But all in all I love what I do.

What is your favorite month?
I guess may favorite month would be December, because it is when my hubby and I were married. I also really enjoy the Christmas season. It just seems that people are more giving and nicer during the winter holidays.

How would friends describe you?
My friends would probably describe me as 'different'.

What does your member name mean?
In my heart and mind I will forever be 29.

Thanks, Wb294evr – and congratulations again on your win!

Gamesville CatchUp CoverAll Winner!Congratulations to Gamesviller Grace863 of Prescott, AZ, who won a quick $385 yesterday playing CatchUp CoverAll.

Useless Fact!

Grace863's hometown of Prescott, AZ, is also home to the historical area known as "Whiskey Row", a business hub and notorious red-light district that existed until 1956. On Saturday, July 14th, 1900, a great fire swept through downtown Prescott with an uncontrollable fury, almost totally destroying the business district of the small mining town. As legend has it, with the water supply for the town a full block south, the patrons of the various bars simply took their drinks across the street to the Courthouse Square and watched the town burn. Congratulations again to Grace863. Looking forward to seeing you all in the games this week and giving away loads more REAL cash prizes!

Human “Bed-Warmers” At Holiday Inn

Written by chriscummings101 / January 22, 2010 9:14 pm / Add New Comment

It's chilly at night, and the fine folks at Holiday Inn have found an "innovative" way to warm things up:

International hotel chain Holiday Inn is offering a trial human bed-warming service at three hotels in Britain this month.

If requested, a willing staff-member at two of the chain's London hotels and one in the northern English city of Manchester will dress in an all-in-one fleece sleeper suit before slipping between the sheets.

"The new Holiday Inn bed warmers service is a bit like having a giant hot water bottle in your bed," Holiday Inn spokeswoman Jane Bednall said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

Sounds pretty cushy! I can see the job advertisements now: "Are you a clean, fresh-scented person? Willing to lay down on the job? Have we got a deal for you…"

Mckonna66 Wins $4,398 Playing Magic 21 Jackpot At Gamesville.com

Written by chriscummings101 / January 22, 2010 5:01 pm / 1 Comment

Prize Winner!Congratulations to Gamesviller Mckonna66 of Santa Rosa, CA, who won a staggering $4,398 yesterday playing Magic 21 Jackpot at Gamesville. This NASCAR-loving apartment manager has been a Gamesville member since 2006, and definitely knows how to play her cards right.

Useless Fact!

Mckonna66's hometown of Santa Rosa, CA, has the distinction of also being the hometown of famous horticulturist Luther Burbank — inventor of the spineless cactus. Why did he need to invent a spineless cactus? So cattle could eat them more comfortably. Wacky cows. If you're ever in the area, be sure to visit Burbank's home and gardens.

Congratulations again to Mckonna66. And remember: You can't win if you don't play, so get in the game — and hopefully next time it'll be your name up in lights!

GV Member Spotlight: Needlife2change

Written by chriscummings101 / January 21, 2010 3:34 pm / Add New Comment

Needlife2change Gamesvillers are the most interesting people — that's why we shine the GV Member Spotlight on them! This time, we're talking with Needlife2change from Salamanca, NY.

Want the GV Member Spotlight to shine on you? E-mail us at: members@gamesville.com

Gamesville: Thanks for taking some time to talk with us, Needlife2change. What inspired your member name?
I'm living with my parents right now because of the economy–there's no work out there! So, I thought "Needlife2change" would fit perfectly.

What kind of changes are you looking for?
Where to begin? I really need a job and I just want to be successful in life! If I can have a home with my husband, and a good job, then I would be happy.

What are you doing to make that change happen?
I'm going to college full time and have six months left on my A.S. degree in Human Services. My husband and I are moving out on our own the first week of February, which will be a positive change!

What's your favorite sound?
Michael Jackson. I really like his music and his talent.

Do you sing while you do your homework?
Of course! Although, whether I'm good at it or not is a different story!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
The Bahamas. When I see those commercials with the crystal clear blue water, I always think, "Man, I wish that was me."

Describe one life lesson you've learned the hard way.
To not move between states so much! I've been moving back and forth between the state where I grew up and the state where my husband is from. We've struggled financially because we kept moving–not to mention all the stress involved! We've recently made a decision, and now we're going to stick with it.

What's the best piece of advice you've heard recently?
To never give up on your dreams. If you want something bad enough and are willing to work at it, things will get better.

What's your favorite Gamesville game?
Three-Eyed Bingo because it keeps you on the edge of your seat. I also enjoy meeting all the nice people in the chat rooms.

Thanks for talking with us, Needlife2change — hopefully your new degree brings new opportunities so the GV community can rejoice in your success!
