Today In History: Navy Commander Shot Into Orbit. Four Sticks Performed Live. And The Offspring Smashes With Smash.

Written by chriscummings101 / May 3, 2013 12:00 pm / 110 Comments

Useless Facts time! On this day in 1961, Navy Commander Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr., was launched into space in the Freedom 7 space capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to travel into space. The suborbital flight lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles.

Definitely making dad proud!

But did you also know…?

On this day in history:

  • Led Zeppelin played Four Sticks for the first (and only!) time in concert (1971);
  • Dancer Cheryl Burke (“Dancing with the Stars”) was born (1984); and
  • The Offspring’s 1994 album, Smash, is certified platinum for the sixth time (2000).

In recognition of the smash hit Smash, let’s listen to the Offspring’s first major single release, Come Out and Play, which reached #1 on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and has become one of the band’s signature songs.

The World’s First Website Returns

Written by chriscummings101 / April 30, 2013 2:45 pm / 20 Comments

April 30th is many things: the day in 311 that Emperor Galerius legally recognized Christians in the Roman Empire; the day the ice cream cone made its debut in 1904; and the day, in 1993, that the World Wide Web entered the public domain.

CERN — the research group that spooked the world recently by smashing protons together with the Large Hadron Collider — made World Wide Web technologies available to everyone, everywhere, royalty-free.

To celebrate the web’s 20th anniversary, the CERN team has revived the very first website at its original location, which you can see at: info.cern.ch

Internet!

We at Gamesville want to celebrate with the CERN team. Without their decision back in 1993, we likely wouldn’t have animated GIFs of cats doing weird things, blogs, Frantic Fish, or the 630 million websites estimated to now exist.

Thanks, guys!

Today In History: Studio 54 Glitters. Saturn’s Spotted. Chernobyl Explodes.

Written by chriscummings101 / April 26, 2013 12:32 pm / 40 Comments

Useless Facts time! On this day in 1977, the most famous (infamous?) nightclub of the disco era, Studio 54, opens for business in New York City. Celebrity guests over the years would include Cher, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and Liza Minnelli.

And glitter.

Lots and lots of glitter.

But did you also know…?

On this day in history:

  • Copernicus made his first observations of Saturn (1514);
  • The world’s worst nuclear disaster occurs at Chernobyl in Kiev (1986); and
  • Our parent company Lycos launches five Web radio music channels, hosted by live Internet DJ’s (1999).

In recognition of Studio 54′s debut, let’s boogie until we can’t boogie no more with this medley of disco clips…

Today In History: The American Revolution Begins. Astronauts’ Historic Debut. And AC/DC Gets A New Lead Singer!

Written by chriscummings101 / April 19, 2013 1:30 pm / 126 Comments

Useless Facts time! On this day in 1982, NASA makes history by naming Sally Ride the first woman astronaut and Guion S. Bluford Jr. the first African-American astronaut.

But did you also know…?

On this day in history:

  • The American Revolution begins as fighting breaks out in Lexington, MA (1775);
  • Connecticut finally approves the Bill of Rights for the U.S. Constitution (1939); and
  • Brian Johnson replaces Bon Scott as lead singer of rock band AC/DC (1980)

Johnson’s first album with the band was the smash-hit Back In Black — the second best-selling album worldwide, behind only Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Let’s launch into the weekend with my favorite track off the album… Shoot to Thrill.

Today In History: The Catcher’s Mask Debuts. The Civil War Begins. And Brenda Catches Dylan And Kelly On A Date.

Written by chriscummings101 / April 12, 2013 8:14 am / 79 Comments

Useless Facts time! On this day in 1877, a catcher’s mask was used in a baseball game for the first time. The lucky mask-wearer was James Alexander Tyng, playing for Harvard University. The team’s manager, Fred Thayer, received a patent for the mask the following year.

But did you also know…?

On this day in history:

  • The American Civil War begins with the Confederates opening fire on Fort Sumter (1861);
  • 5th Dimension’s Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In hits #1 (1969); and
  • TV’s Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills 90210) and Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) were born (1971)

I’m torn here: 90201 and Buffy were both staples at Cummings Worldwide HQ in the 1990′s. Rather than close out the week with a single clip, we’re going out with a double shot!

First, we’ll go back to Beverly Hills and witness Brenda catch Dylan and Kelly on a date – with Superman chiming in as the voice of reason:

Next, let’s revisit Sunnydale in this compilation of my favorite Xander moments:

Today In History: Tina Turner, Niagara Falls, And Susan Lucci – Oh My!

Written by chriscummings101 / March 29, 2013 11:17 am / 75 Comments

Useless Facts time! On this day in 1978, superstar singer Tina Turner was officially divorced from her abusive husband Ike. A few years later, she revived her career with a dramatic comeback that made her more famous than ever.

But did you also know…?

On this day in history:

  • Niagara Falls stopped flowing for a whole day because of an ice jam (1848);
  • the U.S. withdrew from Vietnam (1973);
  • Soap opera star Susan Lucci began the book tour for memoir, All My Life (2011)

I’ll admit, I was a diehard All My Children fan in the late 1990′s. So let’s celebrate Susan Lucci’s epic portrayal of socialite Erica Kane in this temper tantrum tour de force:

The only thing that could top this hotel stay would be a dinner at Wildwind; am I right?

If there’s on thing we’re all about at Gamesville, it’s bingo.

And if there’s another thing, it’s useless facts.

Which brings us to our new regular feature: Today In History!

As Cashtober rolls on, Gamesville players win $2,256 in free cash on Saturday and Sunday

Written by chriscummings101 / October 15, 2012 11:08 am / 52 Comments

The air is getting a little chiller, but the temperature in our accounting department shot up this morning when I told them we awarded $2,256 in cash prizes to 184 different people this past weekend!

This is totally not how accounting looked at me when I gave them
the news about how much money we awarded this weekend

But wait, there’s more…

Last week, Gamesville gave away over $17,000 to more than 700 people!

Written by megadestructo / September 24, 2012 12:16 pm / 35 Comments

We also had two HUGE winners this week. First off let me congratulate Chosen_oneal of Eclectic, AL on her $2,127 win in Three-Eyed Bingo yesterday (9/23)! That’s enough to grab yourself 672 jars of Smucker’s Goobers PB&J spread. Why would you do that? Because our next winner is Rowdysally from Borger, TX who won $9,998 playing Magic 21 last Tuesday (9/18)! Holy smokes! That’s our biggest winner in a long, long time. And because she was a Gold Member, the normal $4,999 jackpot for Magic 21 was doubled. Congratulations! That’s enough to buy 4,007 loafs of WonderBread. Combined with our jars of PB&J and we’ve got enough sandwiches to last us until the next Magic 21 jackpot hits!

Way to go everyone!

But wait, there’s more…

Congratulations to Izanethex on her huge Three-Eyed Bingo win on Gamesville!

Written by megadestructo / September 17, 2012 5:30 pm / 27 Comments

Some hearty congratulations are in order for fellow Gamesviller Izanethex! This member of Billerica, MA (whoah, a local!) won $2,457 playing Three-Eyed Bingo last Thursday (9/13). That’s enough money to buy 24,570 feet of Cat-5 (Ethernet) cable, or over 4.5miles. Time to wire up the entire neighborhood! Hope your router can handle it! Way to go!

But wait, there’s more…
