
The chemical Brilliant Blue G turns lab rats blue in tests
Researchers have discovered that the food dye that gives blue M&Ms their color can help mend spinal injuries. Tests on groups of lab rats concluded that the compound Brilliant Blue G blocks a chemical that kills healthy spinal cord cells around the damaged area. In the tests, rats treated with BBG were later able to walk, although with a limp, and rats that did not receive the BBG solution never regained the ability to walk. On the downside however the treatment caused the skin to temporarily turn bright blue as shown by the photo above. Learn more about this recent discovery at Boing Boing…
