Useless Fact!
The city adjacent to Fruitland, Muscatine, was previously referred to as Bloomington when it was incorporated in 1839. The name led to much confusion, as there were towns of the same name in Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Indiana. Postmasters also routinely mistook for Bloomington for neighboring Burlington.
On June 7, 1849, the town’s name was officially changed from Bloomington to Muscatine, derived from the Mascoutin Indians, a Native American tribe who had originally settled on a large plot just south of the present site of the city.
