Last month, the journal Intelligence published a study asserting that the oldest children in families are likely to have the highest IQs, and youngest children are likely to have the lowest (giving we older siblings everywhere lifelong bragging rights over our younger brothers and sisters). Meanwhile, youngest children are more likely to be creative, radical, and pioneering.
So, what do you think? Based on your experience, does birth order have an effect on personality?

I disagree with their "theory" 100%. There are four of us in my family and the eldest does not have the highest IQ, that honor befalls the 2nd oldest. The radical mantle is the 3rd oldest and the baby of the family has a higher IQ than the oldest. So stick that in your collective pipes Intelligence and smoke it!
ok, so my response might not exhibit my keen intellect but birth order doesn't affect IQs just mental anguish levels. Thank god for group rates on therapy!

LOL if My brother (the oldest) has the highest IQ, My sister and I are in big trouble.
I think the middle child (my sister has the higest IQ as well as the most creativity). I admit that as the youngest was the rebel, radical and the pioneer.

This theory does not work in reality. My family only has two. My older brother has greater practical intelligence, social skills, "street smarts." I have the higher "academic" smarts, spirit of adventure and creativity. Neither one of us is radical or rebellious. We are both different and excell in different areas.

I totally agree with the survey. There are 3 girls in my family, I being the middle child. The oldest sister is the smartest and most successful. My younger sister was spoiled, and is completely different from the rest of the family (no comment!). I being the middle child am more creative and I truly believe it's because of my birth order. 1st born gets all the one on one time with their parents. 2nd born is more or less sharing the parents, which leaves them on their own throughout the years. 3rd born is doted over which makes them iresponsible in many areas.

While I find this "study" interesting, I hardly think there's any merit to it. I am the youngest of four girls, and I was, by far, the most well behaved, creative, and outgoing. On top of that, I happen to know for a fact that my IQ is higher than any of my three sisters. I think that the only thing birth order can honestly predict is how rational parents are in the dicipline and freedoms they give their children.

I am the second of seven siblings and my eldest brother does have the highest IQ but I think that the sex has alot to do with how birth sequence effects the outcome of children. I as the eldest girl of course had to help with all the other babies while as my brother did chores that required a form of skill and learning. Also the youngest girls upon not wanting to be stuck in the traditional relationship excelled above all but my eldest brother and there are no children in my family that are not intelligent so I tend to believe that it is genetic and where we end up has to to with the choices that we make and nothing at all to to with birth sequence.
